PREPARING WOOD

As has been mentioned in the introduction,  there is quite a variety of abrasive papers.  One that has been the staple of local hardware stores  and corner shop is -

FLINT

This lies at the cheapest end of the market.  This is a generally a coloured beach sand, light gray in colour.  The sand is stuck to it’s backing paper with animal glue.  As a result it gives off quite a noticeable smell when the sandpaper warms through friction. And as it warms the glue softens – which doesn’t help holding the grains on. The sand is of a very soft  kind too.  Although cheap for all practical purposes, it is of little use.  Avoid.
