The traditional way to apply a Waxed Wood Finish, is to apply your wax sandwiched between layers of lint free cloth.
The wax is rubbed in with a lint free cloth, or fine cheese cloth, sparingly. You can test if you’ve applied too much wax, by lightly dragging your finger across surface. If it leaves a smear you’ve applied too much.
Once the wax has been applied the turpentine will evaporate leaving the wax behind, ‘ingrained’ into wood surface.
One application won’t be enough. Let the wax harden before applying further coats. The amount of coats applied, will very much depend on the result your getting on the wood. Different woods will respond differently. Softer woods will be harder to work, as you need a hard surface to work against, to effect a finish.
In these instances, it is good practice to seal surface with a thin cut of french polish or, french polish sanding sealer. Once this is dry, sand with Zinc Stearate paper. This will provide a firm even surface for the wax to be applied on.
